Technical Sergeant Hubert Andrew Camper was born in Virginia, the son of Flandress Melvin Camper and Pearl May Salley.

He was assigned to the 499th Bomber Squadron, 345th Bomber Group Medium A B-25 squadron flying out of Port Moresby, New Guinea.

He was killed in action 5 October 1943 and is listed on the Tablets of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Manila, Philippines.

Memorial services for Technical Sergeant Hubert Andrew Camper, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Camper, 725 Anderson street, will be held at 5 o’clock this afternoon at the Calvary Baptist Church. Young Camper was killed in action over New Guinea on Oct. 5, 1943. His parents were notified on that date that he was missing in action and early this month they received confirmation from the War department that he had been killed on that day he was reported missing. Sgt. Camper was born May 4, 1922 at Abingdon, Va., and received his education at Anderson street grammar school and Tennessee high in Bristol. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps April 6, 1942, and was sent to Scott Field, Ill., where he received his basic training, later going to Texas where he was trained in aerial gunnery. He was also stationed in South Carolina for a short time. He was sent overseas in May last year and had been in the Pacific theatre of war nine months when he met death. He was serving as tail gunner on a bomber engaging in action in New Guinea when he went on his final mission and his body is buried there. Camper became a member of Calvary Baptist church when he was 12 years old and had maintained his membership there since that time.
