Hollen “Holland” W. Whaley was born on 5 July 1914, the son of James Harve Whaley and Leatha Ogle. He had been in the Army three years. He was in the first American landing made in November on North Africa, and was slightly wounded in that landing. He was Killed in Action 24 April 1943 in North Africa.

Cpl. Holland Whaley, 28, of Gatlinburg, was killed in action April, 1943 in North Africa. He enlisted in the Army in November, 1939, and went overseas in April, 1942. The body arrived at Knoxville. Survivors: mother, Mrs. Letha Whaley; four brothers, Ben, Alvin, John Leslie and Hansel; four sisters, Mrs. Loren E. Allen, Mrs. A.B. Bull, Mrs. Herbert H. henry and Miss Kathleen Whaley.
