Guy Winifred “Fred” Morrison was the son of William Brackett Morrison and Dessie A. Smith. Cpl. Morrison had been in the army since November, 1942. He had been promoted to Corporal at the Dyersburg Army Air Base in March 1943. Before Dyersburg, he was stationed at Jefferson Barracks and Fort Belvoir in Virginia. In civilian life he worked with Mead Corporation in Kingsport.
Guy was a passenger on the H.M.T. Rohna.
The Rohna and four other troop ships left Oran in French Algeria with cargo and troops. Off Béjaïa, Algeria the convoy was attacked by an estimated 60 German Luftwaffe Heinkel 177’s. One of the 177’s, piloted by Hans Dochtermann, released a glide bomb that hit Rohna on her port side and she eventually sank.
He was reported missing in action in the Mediterranean Area and is memorialized at the North Africa American Cemetery in Tunisia.
