The Knoxville Journal, 20 September 1945
Lt. (jg) Glenn A. Tillett, Central High School graduate, and son of George A. Tillett, Tazewell Pike, who was transferred to the Pacific war theater after the formal end of the war, met a tragic death Sept. 13 from a Jap guerrilla’s gunfire, the Navy Department reported yesterday.  Lieutenant Tillett, 25, was a Hellcat fighter pilot, but he did not complete his training in time to be sent to the war theater before the end of hostilities. The parents received a censorship-free letter from the young man postmarked Sept. 7. He said he was leaving Hawaii for Guam. An hour after the message was received the family received notice from the Navy Department about their son’s death. It is presumed he was landing in Guam when fire upon by a sniper. Press dispatches indicated that guerrillas were still active at many island ports after the surrender of Japan had been announced. Young Tillett attended a school in sports and athletic instructorship at Indianapolis after graduation from Central High School. He had planned to open a gymnasium and sports goods store here after the end of the war. He worked at a California aircraft plant for a year before enlisting for naval air training. He received his wings and commission last June.
