He died in the battle of Coral Sea on 7 May 1942. He was officially declared dead on 8 May 1943. Son of Houston Alexander Mansfield and Eugenia Maude Henry.

Radio Electrician George H. Mansfield of Pikeville, reported “missing in action” a year ago after the U.S.S. Neosho was sunk by enemy action in the Coral Sea, is presumed to have been killed, Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox has advised Mansfield’s father, Hugh Alexander Mansfield of Pikeville.
Secretary Knox advised that after a full review of available information, he was reluctantly forced to the conclusion that Radioman Mansfield is deceased. He added that in accordance with Section 5 of Public Law 490, 77th Congress, as amended “your son’s death is presumed to have occurred on May 8, 1943, which is the day following the day of expiration of an absence of 12 months.”
“I extend to you my sincere sympathy in your great loss and hope that you may find comfort in the knowledge that your son gave his life for his country, upholding the highest tradition of the navy,” Secretary Knox said. According to information received here, Mansfield was assigned as a radioman to a plane of the Carrier Yorktown. He and a group of men from the Yorktown were transferred to the U.S. Neosho just two days before the Neosho was sunk. The group was being taken to a land base for special training. Radioman Mansfield is survived by his father; four sisters, Mrs. Val Reich Jr. of Chattanooga, Mrs. C.E. McCollum of Chicago, Mrs. N.J. Ferguson Jr. of Pikeville and Mrs. A.V. Whitson of Charleston, S.C., and a brother, James Mansfield of Charleston, S.C.
