Corporal George Arthur Essary was born on December 26, 1947, and was originally from Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he graduated from Chattanooga City High School in 1966. He served his country in the Vietnam War as a member of the United States Marine Corps, in A Company, 1st Battalion, 26th Marines, 3rd Marine Division. His tour in viet began on November 19, 1967. On June 7, 1968, Cpl. Essary was killed by small arms fire in Quang Nam, South Vietnam, at the age of 20. He is buried at Rock Springs Cemetery, in Rocky Springs, Jackson County, Alabama, and memorialized on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Panel 59W, Line 22.
