Walter W. Gentry was born on 14 April 1922 in Tennessee. He was the son of Samuel Walter Gentry and Lois Welch. He was killed in action on 2 February 1945 in the French Alps while serving with the Seventh Army. He served with a unit of combat engineers. Lt Gentry is buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Knoxville, Tennessee.

The Knoxville Journal, March 4, 1945:
Previously reported missing in action on Feb. 2, Lt. Walter W. Gentry, 23, son of Mr. and Mrs. S.W. Gentry of Thorn Grove Pike, was killed on that date according to a subsequent War Department telegram received by his parents. Lieutenant Gentry studied at the University of Tennessee and University of Michigan prior to entering service in October, 1944. He received his commission as second lieutenant at Fort Belvoir, Va., and went overseas with a combat engineer battalion in October, 1944. A member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity, he also held a membership in Fifth Avenue Baptist Church.
