For extraordinary heroism in action near Soissons, France July 19, 1918. When the infantry of which he was a part was held up by an enemy machine-gun nest which was inflicting heavy losses upon his platoon, he unhesitatingly went forward to ascertain its location and was killed while performing his courageous duty.
