James Rudolph Gamble was in active service with the US Marine Corps Reserves. He was born on 16 January 1922 in Tennessee, son of Ethel Francis Gamble and Ella Mae Diggs. According to a 1940 census, he was still living in Harriman, TN.

He died on 21 January 1945 in Orange County, California. He is buried at Harriman Cemetery in Harriman, Roane County, TN.

Marine Sgt. James Rudolph Gamble (Rudy), 23, was killed Sunday in an airplane crash while on a routine flight in California. He attended Harriman High School and was employed at the White Store there before enlisting in service Sept. 3, 1942. Sergeant Gamble received his boot training at San Diego, Calif., and attended a technical school in Chicago. He received his gunnery training and flight training in California. He was promoted to sergeant on his birthday, Jan. 16. He was the son of E.F. Gamble and the late Mrs. Gamble. He has two brothers in service, Pvt. Robert L. Gamble, in New Guinea, and Pvt. Kenneth Gamble, Camp Blanding, Fla., and a brother-in-law, Pvt. Meredith Sheldon, with the Fifth Army in Italy. A sister, Mrs. Mary Alice Sheldon, lives in Harriman. Funeral services 2 p.m. at Walnut Hill Baptist Church.
