Fred O’Dell Russell was born in Wise, Virginia, the son of Farley Thomas Russell and Laura Elizabeth Jennings.
He was killed on Iwo Jima.

Funeral services for Private First Class Fred O’Dell Russell, who died on Iwo Jima March 17, 1945, will be held at the Hamlett-Dobson Chapel in Kingsport. Burial will be in City Cemetery. The remains arrived in Kingsport today from Charlotte, N.C. He was born March 19, 1925 at Exeter, Va., and moved to Morrison City community. He attended the Bell Ridge School for nine months and went to work in the plant of the Tennessee Eastman Corp. for nine months before entering the Marines on April 6, 1943. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Farley T. Russell, Route 6, Kingsport, two sisters, Mrs. James H. Gass and Miss Shirley Russell, both of Morrison City community.
