Fred Huston Sotherland was born on 17 October 1921. He was the son of Charles Ross Sutherland and Rachel Lillian Diggs. Brother of Mary Grace Sotherland, Frances Myrtle Sotherland and Dorothy Carolyn Sotherland. He enlisted on June 11, 1942, in Fort Oglethorpe, GA and received training at Camp Swift in Texas.

Pvt. Fred H. Sotherland, age 23 of 201 Sheridan Street, was killed in action in Italy November 22, 1944. He professed christianity at the age of 14 and attended Lonsdale Baptist Church. He was a student of Stair Tech High School in grade 11. He was a member of Company B., 182nd Engineer Battalion. Survivors: mother, Mrs. Rachel L. Sotherland; sisters, Mrs. E.L. Miller and Mrs. Ralph H. Lynch of Knoxville.
