Fred Farmer was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, son of Bettie Farmer. He enlisted at Benton in Tennessee on 14 April 1917.

He was killed in action 17 October 1918 at the age of 20. Buried plot A, row 7, grave 16, at Somme American Cemetery, Bony, France.
