Fred Fisher Phillips was born in Newport on 25 July 1919. He was survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Phillips; brothers, Larry, Roy, Lem, James and Arthur and sisters, Mrs. Lena McPhetridge and Zora Phillips.
He was killed in action 6 June 1944 in the invasion of Normandy, France on D-Day.

Funeral services for Sgt. Fred Phillips, veteran of World War II, will be conducted Friday 2 p.m. with Rev. Carl P. Daw officiating. Interment will follow in Union cemetery with military services at the Grave.
