The Chattanooga Daily Times, 26 July 1945
Reunited with his brother only three days before he was listed missing on March 15, Cpl. Ernest R. Smith, son of Mr. B.E. Smith, 3123 Easton Avenue, was killed in action against the Germans with an infantry unit on that date, the War Department informed his father yesterday. Cpl. Smith and his brother, Sgt. Willard Smith, spent several hours together in Germany soon after Cpl. Smith had gone to the front. It was their first meeting in more than two years. A graduate of Central High School, Cpl. Smith, 28, was employed at the Combustion Engineering Company prior to entering army duty in March, 1943. He received training with an army air force ground crew until he was transferred to the 94th Infantry Division (301 Regiment) in November, 1944. After six weeks infantry training, he was assigned to overseas duty, arriving in Europe in February, 1945. He was immediately assigned to combat duty, relatives said.
Cpl. Smith is survived by his parents; wife, Mrs. Louise Wallace Smith, Daytona Beach, Fla.; two brothers, Sgt. Willard Smith in Germany; Verlin Smith, Chattanooga and one sister, Mrs. James Kelley of the circulation department, Chattanooga Publishing Company. He was the grandson of Mrs. Elizabeth Smith, who resides on Oak Street.
