Edward Matthews Cutshall was born on 2 June 1923 in Limestone, Tennessee, the son of Bartley Chester Cutshall and Lovada Shelton. His brother, James J. Cutshall served with the Marine Corps during World War II and his brother Jack Forest Cutshall with the US Navy.
He was killed in action on 26 November 1944 in Germany

Lt. Edward M. Cutshall, Johnson City airman who has been listed missing over Germany since November 26, received title to wear a Presidential Unit Citation ribbon last month, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. B.C. Cutshall of 116 Legion street have learned. Lt. Cutshall, pilot of a P-47 Thunderbolt fighter plane, was stationed at a base in France at the time he was reported missing. A graduate of Science Hill High School, he was a student at Warren Wilson College, Asheville, N.C., at the time he enlisted in the Air Corps in November, 1942, and was called to service in February of the next year.
