Earl Hollice McCoig was born at White Pine in Tennessee, the son of Daniel “Dan” Melvin McCoig and Zena Coleman.

Earl McCoig enlisted on 13 February 1942 at Fort Oglethorpe in Georgia. He was a passenger on the U.S.S. Ward (APD16) which sailed from Guadalcanal Island to Russell Island on 4 April 1943. He also was a passenger on the U.S.S. Bountiful (AH9) on 1 February 1945.

Mr. and Mrs. Dan M. McCoig of White Pine have received word from the War Department that their son, Pfc. Earl H. McCoig, died on Luzon, Philippines on August 5th, of gun wounds. Pfc. McCoig had been in service for 42 months, and had served 35 months overseas. He had recently written his mothert that he would be home some time during the month of August. He has a brother in the service, Pvt. Alger McCoig, now in Tokyo with the occupation forces. He is also survived by three brothers and three sister, at home, and two other sisters, Mrs. Earl Sluss of Route 4, Morristown, and Mrs. R.L. Payne of Alabama.
