Chief Warrant Officer 4 Daniel Cole, 41, and First Lt. Thomas Joseph Williams Jr., 26 of Knoxville died Saturday when their OH-58D Kiowa Warrior crashed near Caryville’s Exit 141 on Interstate 75 around 5:30 p.m., according to the Tennessee National Guard.

The men served with the 230th Air Cavalry Squadron, Troop C, based at McGhee Tyson Air National Guard Base in Louisville. They were conducting a routine training flight, Guard officials said.

Cole, an instructor pilot, had served more than 20 years, including deployments to Iraq in 2009-10 and Kosovo in 2004-05.

Daniel Earl “Dan” Cole, Chief Warrant Officer 4 – age 41 of Knoxville, formerly of Henderson, TN passed away Saturday, July 9, 2011.

He was a full time member of the Tennessee Army National Guard at AASF #2 as an OH – 58D test pilot and maintenance examiner. He was also an instructor pilot for “C” troop 1st Squadron, 230th Cavalry. Dan graduated from Chester Co. High School in 1989 and attended Freed-Hardeman University and was currently enrolled with the University of Oklahoma.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Warren and Dorothy Cole of Henderson, TN, and J.W. and Ola Johnson of Henderson, TN.

Dan was survived by his loving wife, Deanna Hall Cole; daughter, Lauren Cole; son, Logan Cole; parents, John and Sue Cole of Henderson; sisters and brothers-in-law, Elizabeth L. Naylor and Anthony Naylor and Rebecca F. Ada and Brian Ada; 26 aunts and uncles; and numerous cousins.

A memorial service honoring Dan’s life will be held 12:30 p.m. Friday at Laurel Church of Christ with Rev. Wayne Miller officiating. Interment to follow at Tennessee Veterans Cemetery at 1:30 with Full Military Honors. The family will receive friends from 10:30 – 12:30 Friday at Laurel Church of Christ.

On April 19, 2013, the Tennessee State Legislature passed Public Chapter NO. 482. In the text of the legislation the segment of U.S.Highway 45 in Chester County from Estes Church of Christ at Montezuma Road northward to the corporate limits of the City of Henderson was designated the “Dan Cole Memorial Highway” in recognition of the life of valor of Chief Warrant
