Claude Swanner was born at Milligan, Tennessee, the son of John William Swanner and Mary Hester Woody Swanner. He married Bertha Bennett in 1940 and was the father of Clarence Swanner who died at the age of 4.
Claude Swanner was a passenger on the U.S.S. LST 672, sailing from Hollandia, Dutch New Guinea to Manus, Admiralty Islands on 6 February 1945.

Seaman First Class Claude Swanner, of the U.S. Navy, 32, died of a heart attack March 11 somewhere in New Guinea, his parents have been notified by the Navy Department. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Swanner of Johnson City, route 2. Swanner received his training at Camp Peary, Va., and had been in New Guinea for nine months. Besides his parents, survivors are a brother, Ernest W. Swanner, of Asheville, N.C. and a sister, Mrs. Vernon L. Howell of Johnson City, route 2.
