Claude Johnston Womble was born on 25 May 1910 in Tellico Plains, Tennessee. He was the son of Bennett Franklin “Ben” Womble and Hattie Lou Ona “Onie” Standridge. He married Lola Ruth Breeden in 1932, who passed away in 1938. He then married Annabelle Lee Clayton.
Pvt. Womble was killed on action on 26 July 1944 at the Battle of St. Lo in France

The body of Pvt. Claude J. Womble will arrive in Cleveland for interment in homeland soil. Pvt. Womble was a member of C Company, 320th Regiment, 35th Division, and was killed in action near St. Lo, France, July 26, 1944. In addition to his wife, the former Anna B. Clayton, he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Effie Patterson of Cleveland and Mrs. Cora Hampton of Gruetli, Tenn.; two brothers, Clarence and Carl Womble of Cleveland.
