With the Fifth Army, Italy. Staff Sergeant Clarence Webb of Kingsport has been awarded the Bronze Star Medal posthumously for meritorious service in combat. He served on the Fifth Army front in Italy in the 349th “Krautkiller” Regiment, 88th “Blue Devil” Division. His mother, Mrs. Elizabeth D. Webb, lives at 1217 Pierce Street, Kingsport.

The Silver Star Medal, was posthumously awarded to Staff Sergeant Clarence Webb, for gallantry in action in Italy. “When his company was attacking a town, the troops were held up by intense enemy fire from well emplaced machine guns and a tank that shelled them from close range. Webb crawled forward three hundred yards through the enemy fire. Nearing the machine gun position he fired a rifle grenade, destroyed the gun and inflicted several casualties,” read the award citation. “With German bullets ripping the earth only inches from his body, he assaulted another machine gun position killing one enemy and forcing the rest to flee. Still pressing forward in an attempt to knock out an enemy tank, he was killed by an exploding shell. By his inspiring deed of gallantry, Webb made a vital contribution to the attack and his actions reflect great credit on himself and the armed forces,” concluding the citation.
