Clarence Gaines Roe was born on 2 November 1892 at Bluff City, Sullivan County, Tennessee, the son of Andrew Johnson Roe and Nannie Harkleroad. Brother of Private Charles Fred Roe who was killed in France in WWI.

Private Clarence Ganes Roe, age 50, died at Camp Pickett, Va., Sunday, Nov. 8. Death was due to a heart attack. Private Roe was a veteran of the Mexican War, First World War and had been serving his country in the Second World War since August 24. He was the son of the late Andrew Johnson and Nannie R. Roe, prominent family of Sullivan county, but the Roe family had made their home in Carter county for the past 46 years. Private Roe lost a brother, Private Charles Fred Roe, in the first World War. Private Roe served as honorary pallbearer at the funeral of General Funston at Fort Sam Houston in 1915. He was a member of the American Legion and F.W.V.’s member of Central Methodist Church.
Survivors are three sister; Mrs. Nomb Fair, Miss Bessie Roe, Elizabethton, Mrs. R.C. Brock, Mobile, Ala.; four brothers, Jake E., Toy A., Wiley B., and Robert L. Roe, Elizabethton, 29 nieces and nephews and one aunt. Mrs. Minnie Williamson of Appalachia, Va.
