Private First Class Charles Ransome Raines was born on August 29, 1950, and was originally from Newport, Tennessee. He served his country in the Vietnam War in the United States Marine Corps, as a rifleman in B Company, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division. His tour in Vietnam began on October 10, 1969. A little over two months later, on December 22, 1969, PFC Raines was killed in an explosion under hostile conditions in Quang Nam province, South Vietnam. He was 19 years old at the time of his death. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart medal. PFC Raines is buried at Union Cemetery in Newport, Tennessee, and is memorialized on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Panel 15W, Line 83.
