Charles Reed Benfield died June 1944 in Italy as a result of shrapnel wounds received on Anzio Beachhead. He left home for army service February 7, 1943, and received basic training at Camp Hood, Texas, and went overseas in June, 1943. He attended school at West View and worked in the shipping department of the Kingsport Press. He was survived by his father, James S. Benfield; three sisters, Mrs. Paul Strickler, New Orleans, La., Mrs. Curtis Lane and Mrs. Oscar Mathews of Kingsport and a brother, Earl Benfield of Kingsport.
