Charles Emmert French was the son of James Elbert French and Verla Mae Russell. His mother died in 1925 and Charles and his brother Earl Iddins French resided with their grandmother, Annie Russell in Maryville, Tennessee.

PFC French entered the service from California. He was killed in Italy. He had been overseas five months. He was initially buried at Avellino Cemetery at Avellino, Italy and reburied at Sicily-Rome American Cemetery in Italy, plot J, row 15, Grave 3.
