First Lieutenant Charles Cofer Carlton was born at Shady Dale, Jasper Count in Georgia. He was the son of Charles Chedle Carlton and Lessie Cornelia Cofer.vHe was graduated from Ducktown High School and was a student at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He enlisted on 4 August 1941 at Fort McPherson, Atlanta in Georgia and was assigned to Headquarters, Twentieth Air Force, US Army Air Forces. He received his commission in 1943.
He died non battle on 19 March 1946 and is interred at N,15,67 Manila American Cemetery, Manila, Philippines.

The War Department today ennounced the death of Maj. Gen. James E Parker in the crash of his Army Flying Fortress in Northern Formosa, and listed as missing nine other officers and men aboard. Parker commanded the 20th Air Force. The plane, en route from Shanghai to Nichols Field, near Manila, crashed and burned Tuesday. Mrs. Parker lives in San Antonio, Tex.
Next of kin of the other in the plane described by the department as “missing,” were notified today. These included: First Lt. Charles C. Carlton; mother, Mrs. Lessie C. Carlton, Box 304, Ducktown, Tenn. The crash occurred in the north end of Formosa in terrain described by Tokyo dispatches as wild and rugged. A ground search party of American found the burned wreckage yesterday. The plane was the object of a huge air and sea search after it was reported missing.
