Chambliss Putnam McDowell was born on 16 July 1915 in Blountville, Tennessee. He was the son of Samuel Robert McDowell and Mary Owens Pierce. He died of Injuries 3 June 1945 sustained in action on Mindanao in the Philippines

S/Sgt Chambliss P. McDowell, 28, son of Dr. and Mrs. S.H. McDowell of Blountville, Tenn., died on June 3 of injuries sustained in action on Mindanao in the Philippines, according to information received from the war department. Further details concerning the death of Sgt. McDowell will be given in a letter which will follow, the telegram informed Dr. and Mrs. McDowell of his death stated. Sgt. McDowell volunteered for service in the army on the day following the attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941. He received his call in January but was not actually inducted until May 5, 1942. He trained at Camp Pickett, Va., and was stationed at several other camps in the United States before he was sent overseas in February, 1944. He was serving with Company A, 67th Infantry, at the time of his fatal injury.
He was a graduate of Blountville high school, where he took an outstanding part in athletics, playing on the varsity basketball team. Later he attended Carson-Newman college and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Following his college days, Sgt. McDowell was successively employed by the Tennessee Eastman corporation at Kingsport, TVA and at the time he entered the army was working for the Hercules Powder company at Radford. Surviving are the parents, Dr. and Mrs. McDowell, and one sister, Mrs. J.R. LeSueur, now living with her parents in Blountville while her husband is in service.
