First reported Sevier County war casualty in overseas duty is Burnette Lewelling, 25, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. W.H. (Buddy) Lewelling. Young Lewelling, belived injured in an accidental explosion while not under enemy gunfire, died Sept. 10, relatives in Knoxville and Sevierville have been notified by the War Department. At the time he was fatally injured he was believed stationed in India where he was sent two months before the accident. He died ironically, on the same date his brother-in-law, Bruce Stanton, of Maryville, was electrocuted by a live wire while working at Alcoa. News of Lewelling’s death was intentionally withheld from his sister, Mrs. Bruce Stanton, due to shock over her husband’s death. Before Lewelling was sent into the Far East he was trained at Fort Bragg, N.C., and Fort Moultrie, S.C. The Government’s only notification of Lewelling’s death stated briefly that he was killed in action but not due to enemy gunfire. A friend, also stationed in India, wrote survivors that a gun blew up resulting in his death, but this was not confirmed by authorities. Surviving are brothers, L.L. Lewelling, Sevierville, Aubrey Lewelling, Maryville, Vestel Lewelling, stationed in Great Britain and four sisters, Mrs. Dave Settlemyer, Knoxville; Mrs. Rex Fox, Sevierville; Mrs. Bruce Stanton, Maryville, and Mrs. Hugh Overton, Knxoville.
