Burl David “Buddy” Underwood was born in 1922, the son of Henry Russell Underwood and Grace Mae Smith. Husband of Imogene Bailey and father of Patricia Anne Underwood.

S1C Burl David Underwood enlisted in the USCG on 16 Dec 1941. He was killed in an accident on 08 Oct 1942. S1C Underwood is buried in the National Cemetery in Chattanooga, TN.

Funeral services for Burl David Underwood, 19-year-old coast guard gunner, who was killed in the line of duty last Thursday at New Bedford, Mass., will be held at the Bell Avenue Church of God. Full military honors will be accorded the coast guardsmen and interment will be in the National cemetery.  The body arrived here last night from New Bedford. Mrs. Imogene Bailey Underwood, the coast guardsman’s wife, and a 6-month-old daughter was aboard the train. Underwood is also survived by his mother, Mrs. Grace Underwood of Chattanooga.
