SGT Bobby G. Haynes was a loader on a Sheridan tank with Troop C, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. On September 6, 1969, during a reconnaissance in force mission reinforcing another troop five miles south of Loc Ninh Air Field in Binh Long Province, RVN, Troop C came under an intensive barrage of small arms, automatic weapons, and rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) fire from an estimated battalion of North Vietnamese Army soldiers. During the engagement, SGT Haynes climbed on the turret of his tank to direct the crewmen. While aggressively fighting the enemy, an RPG slammed into the Sheridan, killing Haynes instantly. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star for bravery.
