Albert Arthur “Art” Legg was born on 5 August 1925, the son of Arthur Edward Legg and Mary Virginia “Mamie” Cook.

The body of S2C Albert Arthur Legg, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur E. Legg, who died on Jan. 31, 1946, wile on duty in Japanese waters, is en route home for reburial. Full funeral arrangements will await further notification from the redistribution center in Atlanta. Young Legg was born here on Aug. 5, 1925, and volunteered for army duty at the age of 17, but was unable to report due to illness. Later, at the age of 18, he was accepted for navy service in October, 1943. After training at the Great Lakes Naval Station he was assigned to sea duty with Mine Sweeper 468, based at Norfolk. Again stricken by illness, he was flown to California and hospitalized with rheumatic fever in 1944. He rejoined his ship and after service in the Atlantic was transferred to the Pacific, where most of his service before V-J Day was around Okinawa and in the China Sea. He was again stricken during one of the last operations in Korean waters and died three days later on the hospital ship Samaritan in the harbor of Sasebo, Japan. He was buried with full military honors in the American Armed Forces Cemetery at Yokohama. He was a grandson of the late Dr. and Mrs. Frank Gardner Legg of Coldwater, Mich., and of A.A. Cook and the late Mrs. Mary Augusta Hoge Cook of South Pittsburgh. Before entering the service he attended Webb School, Bellbuckle, and the Sewanee Military Academy.
